Driving/Sailing/Flying into New EDH

Driving/Sailing/Flying into New EDH

State of Play - July 3, 2025

Sam Fedderly

I’m sure you heard the news -  alongside the release of Edge of Eternities, a major EDH rules change is arriving: Legendary Vehicles can now be your commander. While this doesn’t sound like the biggest change in Magic’s history, there are some ripple effects that are already starting to appear. For starters, the card “RMS Titanic” from the Doctor Who set saw a whopping 700% price increase since the announcement of the rules change, going from $0.60 to $5.00. This is likely only the beginning of the price fluctuations we’ll see, as I’m sure brilliant magic players all around the world are trying to break it as we speak. One exciting aspect of legendary vehicle commanders that differentiates them from typical play is that they can’t be immediately removed with creature removal since they aren’t creatures until crewed.

The release of Edge of Eternities is sure to add to the already long list of legendary vehicles released from Aetherdrift and Assassin's Creed. After EOE’s release, players' new found interest in legendary vehicles will quickly extend to previous sets, so you should snatch good legendary vehicles while they're relatively cheap! Here are some Legendary Vehicles that I think might be worth taking a second look at picking up sooner rather than later (prices as of July 3, 2025).

Jackdaw ($0.36)

Jackdaw can very easily refill your hand, and that added card advantage is crucial in longer games of Commander. Costing only three mana and hitting for four with an incredible upside, I would reach for this card for sure. It is also rare among the legendary vehicles to have access to two different colors, since most of them are colorless or mono color. Some notable deck includes are: Psychosis Crawler, The Locust God, and Ominous Seas.

Weatherlight ($1.05)

The amount of card selection you can get when this ⅘ flier slams into your opponent is sure to give you a large advantage. The fact that this card is colorless does restrict your card pool, however, I’m sure you could still muster up a formidable board of colorless crew members pretty quickly. Some notable deck includes are: Summon: Bahamut, Ugin, the Uneffable, and Forsaken Monument.

Esika’s Chariot ($0.41)

The revival of this card from its reign in standard is sure to rock your commander pod. There is nothing like casting a four mana spell and getting 8 power on the board with an added benefit of copying tokens that you control. The card also doesn’t discriminate about having the tokens be creature tokens either, so have fun playing against some wild shenanigans when this hits the table! Plus, who wouldn’t want to play a commander whose art features two adorable and incredibly fluffy house cats. Some notable deck includes are: Idol of Oblivion, Mimic Vat, and Gruff Triplets.

Honorable mentions

The indomitable, Golden Argosy, and Parhelion II

Conclusion

Now, do I think that this will forever have a huge impact on EDH as a whole? Well, that largely depends on the Legendary Vehicles released in the coming sets. WoTC can only entice players to adopt legendary vehicle commanders if they make them more powerful or interesting than their legendary creature counterparts. On the other hand, if the legendary vehicles stay at the power level that they currently are, then I don’t think they will have much impact other than the nuance of being less prone to targeted creature removal. The important takeaway is that the powerful legendary vehicles that currently exist will likely raise in price, and we’re sure to see some crazy new legendary vehicles in the future. Happy gaming!
